ATHLETICS - SAM COMPETES AT HIGHEST LEVEL - Feb 14th 2009
Congratulations to Sam Petty in the Lower Sixth who competed in Birmingham at the U20 National Indoor Championships at 800m.
He did extremely well in his heat, finishing 2nd and beating the Southern area champion on the line to qualify for the final, where he finished 6th.
His time in the heat of 1.56.27 was only half a second outside his outdoor best and ranks him in the top 10 U20s so far this year. A fantastic achievement, Sam is an inspiration to all our athletes with the commitment and dedication he puts into his sport.

CROSS COUNTRY- GLIDDON & SQUIRES RESULTS - Feb 1st 2009
The North Devon Cross Country League, which has been taking place throughout the winter, has come to an end with many Kingsley students running successfully. Abbie Loka, Ollie Mathers, Alex Gurr, Ryan Ashton, Connor MacGillivray, Ben Ainger, James Pugsley, Toby Mill, Tory Morgan, Chloe MacGillivray, Nicolle Hockin, Emma Corrick and Alistair Soffe all won medals, whilst trophies for finishing in the 1st 6 overall were awarded to Anna Charles, Christina Tang, Charlie Morgan, Ryan Waters, Bethan Waters and Ross Ashton. Special congratulations to Tom Pugsley who won the senior boys competition and led his team to victory as well. The U-13 Boys', U-15 Boys' and U-19 Ladies' teams all finished 2nd in their sections. And not forgetting staff and parents who ran, including Mrs Jackson, Mrs Waters, Mrs Stella, Mr Hockin and Mr Mathers!

BOYS HOCKEY - VICTORY AGAINST KELLY COLLEGE - Jan 28th 2009
Kingsley School's under 15 hockey team enjoyed their visit to Kelly College last week, coming away from a hard-fought match with a 1- 0 victory.
Jamie Mead battled successfully against the strong Kelly forwards and Francis Soffe slipped the ball past the Kelly defence. Kingsley hockey coach Mr Pete Claridge praised the fantastic effort put in by all the players.

JUDO - SIX CHOSEN FOR COUNTY TEAM - Jan 28th 2009
Kingsley School's Judo Academy entered six judo players for the County Team Selection competition held in Plymouth on 14th & 28th January. All six were awarded their County Colours and have been chosen to represent Devon in the Inter-County Team Championships to be held at Kingsbridge on 15th February.
Adam Palmer, Alikhan Dashaev and (Kingsley parent) Dr Bruce Hughes will be in the Senior Men's team.
The Senior Ladies' Team will include Nicolle Hockin and Nigerian Olympic Games judo player Kate Ekuta.
Ross Ashton has been selected for the Devon Youth Team.

GYMNASTICS - KINGSLEY TEAMS LEAD THE WAY IN EXETER - Jan 24th 2009
It was the turn of the Kingsley School senior teams to collect the most medals at the Devon Schools competition in Exeter on Saturday. The two U13 Girls teams were placed 1st and 3rd, the two U19 Girls teams were placed 1st and 3rd and the U19 Mixed team were also awarded gold medals. In the younger age groups, the U11 Mixed team won their event and the U9 Mixed team took the silver medals. Well done to all the girls and boys who took part.

GYMNASTICS - GREAT START TO THE YEAR - Jan 18th 2009
After a hard-working Christmas break devoted to creating a unified post-merger Kingsley squad, the team were understandably really happy with their first big event. The combined Edgehill and Grenville squad took part in the South West Schools Carita House competition in Taunton. They can be seen here wearing their new Kingsley team fleeces and are eagerly looking forward to next weekend's Devon Schools Championships in Exeter.

CROSS COUNTRY - RUNNERS REPRESENT NORTH DEVON - Jan 17th 2009
Eight students from Kingsley(Grenville) represented North Devon at the County Cross Country Championships in Plymouth on Saturday. Some runners were competing for the first time in a new age group and were extremely pleased with their performances, others were suffering from winter season coughs and colds and didn't feel on this occassion that they produced their best.Fantastic efforts from Beth Radford, Emma Corrick, Nicolle Hockin, Ryan Waters, Toby Mill, James Bunney, Tom Pugsley and Sam Petty.

Congratulations to Sixth former Sam Petty who competed in Cardiff at the South West Indoor Championships in the 800m. It was his first year competing as an Under 20, where he beat all the seniors and ran an indoor pb. His training is working towards the National Indoor Championships in Birmingham next month and we look forward to hearing about future successes there. Sam is also one of ten Kingsley (Grenville) students representing N. Devon in the county cross country event in Plymouth on Saturday 17th Jan.

JUDO - CHAMPIONS VISIT - BLACK BELT AWARD - Dec 1st 2008
Grenville’s Director of Sport Alan Sturrock was delighted to welcome
African Champion Catherine Ekuta, who represented Nigeria
at the Tokyo Olympics and is now in training for London 2012,
as Coach in Residence to the Grenville Academy,
where she will work with John Davies, the Academy and team coach.
As Catherine arrived, further excitement came with the visit
of former European, Commonwealth and World Champion
Loretta Cusack.
Loretta ran the mat for a special session featuring Catherine Ekuta
and another aspiring Grenville Olympian Adam Palmer, who has just achieved his Black Belt 1st Dan at his first attempt.

JUDO - STUDENTS TRAIN WITH WORLD CHAMPION - Nov 10th 2008
Players from Grenville Judo Academy train regularly at Bath University with National and International Judo Players. On Monday evening Adam Palmer (Grenville) and Alikhan Dasheav (Edgehill, training with Grenville Judo Club) had the pleasure of training with Kosei Inoue (Japan). Adam Palmer was lucky enough to take him on in combat.
Inoue won Gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was the World Champion in 1999 he has never been beaten in any Judo tournament. The two lads had a great time and will be training with Inoue and other national and International players during their time as Members of Team Bath. The three Grenville players who are members of Team Bath are: Adam Palmer, Ross Ashton and Alikhan Dasheav.

SWIMMING - RELAY TEAM THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINAL - Nov 12th 2008
Sam Petty, James Bunney, Oli Taylor and Andreas Murgelas travelled to Millfield for the Regional Schools Swimming Relay Championships. The boys' swam a magnificent Freestyle Relay and were rewarded with a place in the National Schools Final to be held in Gloucester in March.

BIATHLON - SUCCESS - Nov 9th 2008
At the South West Schools Biathlon Championships,
held at Millfield School in Somerset
Grenville’s 22 strong squad and their Coach
won medals galore in this combined swimming & running event.
Year 10 boys team – came 3rd.
Year 11 boys team - came 2nd, which automatically qualified them for the National Finals in Bath next spring.
The Year 11 girls & 6th Form girls’ teams finished 3rd.
But the big winners were the 6th Form boys –
James Bunney, Sam Petty & Ollie Taylor –
who won their team event, and claimed 1st [James Bunney]
& 2nd [Sam Petty] places in the individual competition.
This was, astonishingly, the sixth year in succession that Grenville students have won this trophy.
Grenville’s Simon Mathers rounded off an outstanding day for the College by coming 1st in the Coaches’ event, pictured in the centre below.

OLYMPIC VISITOR - "SuperSchools" Sept 30th 2008
Students from the Junior School and Years 7 and 8 taking part in the "SuperSchools" fun, fitness, and fund-raising event were rewarded with a visit from Modern Pentathlete Sam Weale, recently returned from competing in the Beijing Olympics. Sam chatted to the children and told them all about his experiences in China where he came 10th overall after taking part in swimming, horseriding, shooting, fencing and running. The students were put through their paces in the gym, raising money to help support young athletes in pursuit of excellence. I'm sure our own aspiring sports stars at Grenville were inspired by Sam as a champion role model. They can be seen here wearing Sam's specialist event clothing, keeping fit and at the final question and answer session.

INTER HOUSE - IT'S A KNOCKOUT - Sept 29th 2008
This fun, Inter House sports event is enjoyed enormously by everyone in the Senior School. Mixed teams of boys and girls across the age groups from 11 to 18 years, compete for their houses with great enthusiasm, cooperation and team spirit. The event is a marvellous ice-breaker for new students to Grenville, and a chance for all to join in the games and laughter with confidence.

ROWING - SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS PLYMOUTH - Sept 12th 2008
Once again the most outstanding result of the Junior Regatta came from the Ladies U14 quadruple sculls. Hannah Myers, Nicky Reed, Jessica Myers and Alice Jackson, with cox Tom Loka, were confident winners of the event, beating the nearest opposition by more than 5 lengths. The girls also secured podium places with Alice 2nd in the U14 single sculls and Jess & Alice 3rd in the U14 double sculls. The boys were not to be out done with Grenville's Tom Pugsley, Thomas Carlyon, Chris Glover and Tom Loka, coxed by Chris Daniel from the Blues taking 3rd place in the South Coast Championships Mens U18 coxed four.

What an exciting afternoon, watching Grenville student Sam Petty live on Sky Sport. A magnificent run meant Sam came 3rd in the English Schools Athletics Championships 800m Intermediate Boys event in a time of 1.56.67. Tom Vinall and Milo George represented Grenville College in the North Devon Schools Tennis Championships held at Tarka Tennis. They lost in the final to Braunton having beaten Chumleigh in the Quarter-Final and West Buckland in the Semi-Final.

TENNIS - DEVON FINAL - July 2008
The under 15 Tennis Team travelled to Exeter University for the Devon final of the Nestle Division 2 Cup on July 3rd. Superb unbeaten performances by Tom Vinall and Milo George and a tie break battle by Ryan Waters resulted in a 3 set draw against South Dartmoor College. The boys were unlucky not to take the trophy after a 32 - 29 games count back left them as runners up.

ROWING - GRENVILLE U18 FOURS WIN AT TOTNES - June 2008
Thomas Carlyon, Carl Hoepner, Christopher Glover and Tom Loka were the pride of the College rowing club on Saturday 28th June at the Totnes Regatta. The boys held off local rivals Bideford Reds to win by one length in what was described as probably the most exciting of a busy days 122 races.

Parents and friends enjoyed a wonderful presentation of Dance and Gymnastic skills by the girls in years 7 to 10.
Below are theYear 7's performing "Lindy Roc", and Year 8's with toes pointed skywards for a dance entitled "Synchronised Swimming & Machines".


The Under 13 Gymnastics Squad included some aerial moves as part of their routine, and the Year 10's performed to Vogue by Madonna in a dance entitled "Models".


The evening included individual and group ballet, jazz and gym pieces and an exciting, fast moving, gymnastics display using the trampette and vault.

SPORTS LEADERS UK - GRENVILLE CONGRATULATED - May 2008
PE at Grenville has been enhanced this year by the inclusion of the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Course, which 24 members of Year 11 are soon to complete. The External Examination Verifier commented in his report on the "...comprehensive and robust quality assurance system in place, indeed considerably more than the required sampling is being done" and concluded "Grenville College is to be congratulated on the rapid progress made with this course."
We look forward to developing the course next year and have approached the Schools Sports Co-ordinator based at Bideford College with a view to creating links with local primary schools.

SWIMMING - INTER SCHOOLS GALA OVERALL WINNERS - 12th May 2008
A fantastic result for the Grenville Teams. Rosie Klymow was not only captain for the U14's but swam for the U18 girls also, standing in for some badly blistered Senior Girls recovering from Ten Tors. Ashleigh Clayton who obviously has tougher skin on her feet than her Ten Tors Team mates swapped her walking boots for the pool to prove her Herculeon stamina and versatility!

On the 24th February 2008 the Grenville boys U15 and U16 Biathlon teams travelled
to Bath University for the Finals of the British Biathlon Championships.
Congratulations go to Sam Petty winner of the U16 individual swin/run event, James Bunney runner up in the U16 individual event and also to Oli Taylor who joined them to be crowned the British Schools U16 Biathlon Team Champions for the 5th year running.
Following close behind in their footsteps were Andreas Murgelas, Mark Brend and Ross Ashton who were runners up in the U15 team event.

ROWING - UNDER 18 COXED 4 BREAK RECORD
The Grenville U18 Coxed 4 were thrilled to discover that they had broken the course record for their event at the Exeter Head on February 9th 2008. The team of 4 boys; Tom Loka and Chris Glover from Grenville and 2 rowers from Bideford Reds, coxed by Grenville Rowing Coach Tina Robertson, completed the course in 14.17 minutes. After a foggy start, the weather cleared to a perfect windless sunny day, also enjoyed by Carl Hoepner and Angus Gaskell in single sculls and Bethan Waters and Ashleigh Clayton as a coxless pair.

SWIMMING - BOYS TEAM COMPETE IN SHEFFIELD FINAL
Congratulations go to James Bunney, Sam Petty, Oli Taylor, Andreas Murgelas and Mark Brend who travelled to Sheffield on 2nd February 2008 to compete in the National English Schools Swimming Championships. The College team came in a fantastic 11th place, the boys missing the free-style final by only 0.02 seconds.

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING - NORTH DEVON CHAMPIONSHIPS
Grenville College hosted the 2007 North Devon Schools Cross Country Championships on the 7th December. The beautiful grounds of the College Moreton site presented a challenging course for 300 competitors from 9 senior schools.
Mr Lane sent the following message to the Grenville students who took part:
"Whenever there are cross-country matches you always give absolutely everything of yourselves to the races, but on Friday I thought you surpassed yourselves in your efforts. Very well done to all of you."

SWIMMING - WATER POLO TEAM EXCEL AT CHARTERHOUSE
The newly formed Waterpolo Team travelled for 4 hours on the 4th December 2007 to compete at one of the oldest public schools in the country. The Grenville boys performed magnificently after only three training sessions against very experienced teams from Charterhouse and Eton. The score finished 7-5 to Charterhouse after end to end play, with the lead changing hands many times. Eton were the winners with a 6-3 victory, but Grenville heads were definitely held high.

Special mentions from the team coach Simon Mathers went to:
Ollie Dell - First game ever and he played in goal, impressive when you have to tread water the whole time!
Mark Brend - Incredible in defence.
James Bunney - Immense! His power and goals made him stand out as player of the tournament. Both Charterhouse and Eton picked him out, so high praise indeed.

SWIMMING - BOYS TEAM IN NATIONAL RELAY FINAL
After competing at Millfield in November, news has just come through that the Grenville Intermediate Boys Swimming Team have been chosen to compete at the National English Schools Championships in Sheffield in February 2008. The boys will take part in both the Freestyle and Medley Relay events. A superb result for James Bunney, Sam Petty, Oliver Taylor, Andreas Murgelas and Mark Brend.

RUGBY - END OF SEASON VICTORY FOR 1st XV
The Grenville 1st XV enjoyed a fitting victory against Sidcott School on the 28th November. After a scrappy first half, the second half saw a huge effort by the pack to force their way over the line, for a magnificent try scored by George Snell. This allowed the backs to settle and soon the pitch opened up with only the excellent defence of the Sidcott side holding the repeated attacks.
Alan Sturrock (Head of Sport) picked out the folllowing players who have been outstanding this season: Sam Mead (Captain), Harry Langdon (Vice Captain), Sam Smith (Club Captain) and George Snell.

ROWING - BRITISH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS AND TOTNES HEAD
Tina Robertson took a group of 9 students to the Concept2 British Indoor Rowing Championships at the NIA in Birmingham on Sunday 18th November 2007. Fast times and personal bests were the order of the day, with the best result recorded by Alice Jackson coming in 9th place in the Women's J14 class.
On the same day, the rowers who prefer the outdoor life took part on the river in the Totnes Mini Head race.

SURFING - END OF SEASON AWARDS
The College Surf Club ended the season on November 8th 2007 with a fun competition at Westward Ho!, where the Best Wave award went to Jamie Mead in year 9. BRITISH SURFING ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATES were awarded in Assembly:
LEVEL 3 to Adam Hughes, Ben Ainger, Ben Giddy, Jacob Sharp, Joshua Braddick, Ryan Waters, Holden Reeves, Janus Drogomirecki, Felix Graf, Johannes von Oswald, and Pierre Jayez.
LEVEL 4 to Jamie Mead and Lewis MacDonald
LEVEL 5 to Luke Giddy.

Instructors from the North Devon Surf School were impressed by the keen attitude of all the group and are aiming to take them to the Inter-Schools surf competition in September 2008.

On Sunday November 18th Bethan Waters enjoyed her first match playing as part of the Devon County Under 17 squad against the U19s at Exeter University.

SWIMMING - ENGLISH SCHOOLS RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
A team of 29 students travelled by coach to Millfield for the regional round of the championships on the 14th November 2007. There were great personal swims by James and Alex Bunney, both breaking the 26 seconds barrier for 50m freestyle. Sam Petty knocked 2 seconds off his PB in the backstroke. We are eagerly awaiting the official team results.

RUGBY - VICTORY AT LAST FOR THE U15 TEAM
After a close 13 - 11 loss to Kelly College in September, the U15 team has lacked confidence and has endured a list of near results against the likes of Blundells School and Exeter School. JUDO - SQUAD SELECTED FOR BRITISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
On Friday 9th November the Grenville College Judo Squad spent the evening in Torquay training with the county coach.The squad have been selected for the British Schools Team championships in Wolverhampton on 24th November 2007.
Four members of the squad were selected to represent Devon in the Western Area Championships in Bristol on 25th November 2007. Congratulations go to Ross Ashton year 10, Nicolle Hockin year 11, Alex Way year 9 and Jo Klymow year 6.

BIATHLON - OUSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN REGIONAL COMPETITION
A fantastic day was enjoyed by all who participated in this swim/run event held at Millfield School on 4th November 2007, with schools from all over the South West. The Grenville Intermediate Boys team, made up of Sam Petty, James Bunney and Oliver Taylor came 1st overall. Sam Petty also came 1st in the individual competition after being pushed hard by James Bunney who came in 2nd place. They are now through to the National Competition at Bath University in February 2008. Congratulatiions also go to the Junior Boys team who came in a creditable 4th place.

NETBALL - NORTH DEVON SELECT FOUR GRENVILLE PLAYERS
After trials early in November 2007, four girls have been selected to represent North Devon. in the U16 age group, Sorrel Nixon, Katie Owens and Sarah Hookway have started training with their squad and Alice Jackson has been selected for the U14's. We look forward to hearing how they get on when the matches begin.

JUDO - BIDEFORD HOME FOR TOP JUDO STAR
Bideford is the new home for international judo star Sabrina Schemmel.
Sabrina, aged 16, has already won her age group’s national title in her home country Germany, and gained world-wide recognition coming third in an international tournament in Rotterdam.
Sabrina has moved to Bideford to study for her A-levels at Grenville College, where she hopes to improve her English and work towards a career in medicine. Sabrina will be training with the UK national squad at Bath University and will hopefully be competing in London at the 2012 Olympics.
