MESSAGE TO POTENTIAL TEAM MEMBERS
from The Headmaster, Andy Waters - 10th October 2008

This is one of the most demanding challenges a student can undertake. Weather conditions have varied in recent years from snow and floods, to heat that made dehydration a major problem. The average weight carried by last year's team members was 18kg per person, or 40lb. Physical fitness, stamina, and speed both uphill and downhill are the key personal requirements.

In addition, we seek students with resilience, a sense of humour, determination to succeed, the ability to press on with minor injuries or blisters, some resistance to cold, and the self-discipline to do what is needed to help the team succeed even though they might be rather eating or resting! Some experience in map-reading, navigation, camp-craft, cooking, or first-aid is valuable, although we will teach these skills to new applicants during selection and training.

The greatest single attribute, however, is teamwork skills. This challenge is about getting all six to finish - there is no place for the selfish, the uncommunicative, those who do not share their strengths, or those who cannot admit their weaknesses.

Ten Tors is a wonderful challenge, and the sense of achievement felt by last year's successful teams made up for all the hardships endured during training and the event.

TEN TORS 2007

Grenville College is immensely proud of its 2007 Ten Tors teams. Both teams reached Tor 7 on the Saturday, before the event was cancelled by the Army after torrential rain and fog made conditions too dangerous for the challenge to continue.
