Vocational Studies

As the name suggests, this department is dedicated to providing a vocational alternative to traditional A levels in the Sixth Form. Our students are able to achieve success without the pressure of exams or "text heavy" coursework requirements. We run two courses:

  • Business
  • Public Services

  • Both courses lead to OCR National Certificate Level 3.

The courses run from the Vocational Studies Centre. The centre has its own study area with networked computers and a variety of teaching facilities; ranging from cosy and informal areas, for small group tutorials, to a large airy space for presentations and visiting speakers. Class sizes are normally between 7 and 14.

    Syllabus OCR National Certificate

    Vocational Studies Vocational Studies

Both the Business Course and the Public Services Course follow the same general design.

Six Unit Certificates qualify for UCAS points (Pass - 40 points, Merit - 80 points & Distinctiion - 120 points).
They present students with a real alternative to traditional AS/A2 level study in the Sixth Form and are particularly suited to those who may be considering a career or higher education course in business or the public services. However the skills and understanding acquired are equally as valid for many other careers. This is a high quality, industry-recognised qualification with which students can progress to Higher Education or enter the workplace at trainee level.

Completion of coursework is evidenced in many ways: written reports, presentations, talks, observation of activities etc. This flexible system is particularly suited to students who have a practical approach to learning. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own coursework and at their own pace.

There are visits to local businesses and public service providers; major sections of the coursework are based on these visits.

A team-building course takes place during the year, which helps students to learn to work together.

Public Services students take part in an expedition and are visited by speakers from one or more of the major armed forces.

An OCR Moderator in each subject visits the department twice per academic year to sign off the students' work to be entered for accreditation. This means that coursework evidence - such as posters, videos etc. does not need to be posted away from the college.

BRISTOL ZOO VISIT 13th October 2008

Grenville College students made the 4th annual visit to Bristol Zoo. On a day that started with a difficult and busy journey and not very promising weather conditions, we experienced the delights of the zoo and enjoyed some informative and useful educational talks; the day soon became sunnier and brighter to make our visit an enjoyable one once again. Our first trip, three years ago, saw two members of staff and twelve students travelling to Bristol in a school mini-bus for two Business Studies talks and a look around the zoo. Impressed with both the zoo and the quality of its educational services, the staff encouraged others to join them. The following year saw the Year Sevens join us for a team building day, the next year, a group of Biology A level students accompanied us and this year we were also joined by a group of Psychology students. The students always enjoy this combination of education and a day out; Bristol Zoo is small enough for the younger pupils not to feel insecure but interesting and varied enough to keep the Sixth Formers and staff entertained.
