The department aims to deliver a range of activities that allow all students to enjoy taking part iin physical activity. This should lead to life long participation and the development of an understanding of the place of physical activity in healthy living.

We strive to allow those who enjoy participating in a competitive environment a range of activities in which the school competes against other schools at appropriate levels.

The department also supports a number of elite performers through the Team Bath and Grenville College Judo Academy and Scholarship winners for specific activities or those who train outside of school.

    Syllabus GCSE

    GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This course is taught over Years 10 and 11 and has both a practical and theory content. The theory is worth 40% and the practical is worth 60% of the final mark.

      THEORY
This is split into three main areas:
      • Exercise and training. This includes reasons for taking part in sport, health and skill related fitness, training methods and diet.
      • Safety spects and risk assessment. This included prevention of injury and different sports injuries.
      • Applied anatomy and physiology. The major topics of the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal and muscular systems are covered in relation to sport.

      PRACTICAL
Four sports have to be chosen, for assessment, in consultation with PE staff. There is a real range of possibility here so that we can meet the individual needs of each pupil. Sports such as skiing, sailing and kayaking can be examined alongside the more traditional areas of rugby, netball and rounders. There is a coursework mark and then a final examination day where an outside moderator marks pupils in association with College staff.

      ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE
This is a piece of written coursework that pupils have to complete worth 10% of the practical mark. This is linked to their favourite sport and involves showing an understanding of the principles and methods of training relating to it.

The department has been very successful in recent years. Last year we achieved 7 A* grades and no one gained less than a C grade on the full course. One of our pupils was commended for gaining one of the ten highest marks in the country and I am sure we will be aiming for these heights with your child as well!
