In the Senior School, French and Spanish are taught to all students from Year 7. At the end of Year 9, the students can choose to continue with either or both languages. Whilst those for whom English is a challenge are encouraged to take up a new language, the school understands that this will not always be appropriate.

Our aim is to encourage students to express themselves and to understand others. We work to build an appreciation of other languages and cultures and an enthusiasm for communication. Through varied teaching styles, our specialist teachers aim to develop the problem solving techniques of the students and to offer a sound understanding of language learning principles.

The MFL department consists of four members of staff. Our teaching rooms are equipped with computers, CD players and a television. MFL software is installed on the school network and we also subscribe to specialist websites.

    Syllabus Years 7 to 9

Students in Years 7 to 9 learn both French and Spanish. They are placed in sets according to ability, although movement between the two sets is quite fluid and reviewed regularly as students develop at different stages. The lower of the two sets tends to be smaller to allow for more individual attention.

Students study the METRO 1 - 3 course, over three years.

    Spanish
