History at Grenville ia a popular subject, with many pupils opting to take it at GCSE and AS/A2 level each year. The Department aims to build up enthusiasm for, and appreciation of, this fascinating subject. Pupils who study history learn much, gain a great many skills in the process, and develop an interest in history which we hope will be with them throughout their lives. In short we aim to "bring History to life" and look forward to our pupils using the past to build a successful future. |

Syllabus Years 10 and 11 - GCSE
The Department prepares candidates at GCSE for the Edexcel School's History Project, Specification C. The Course requires pupils to study history in at least two different ways, in depth and thematically. It also provides pupils with the opportunity to study on a variety of scales: local, national European and international; and across a range of perspectives: political, social and economic. Germany c1919 - 1945 - This enquiry examines the reasons for and the inpact of totalitarianism in Germany. Topic areas include the "rise of the Nazi Party", "Government of the Third Reich" and "education, youth and propaganda in Nazi Germany". Medicine from Medieval times to the 1900's - This is a study of changes in medicine and public health in England from the time of the Black Death to the present day. An extension unit also looks at changes in surgery across the same period including the role of key individuals like Pare and Lister. Two pieces are produced worth 25% of the final grade. |

AS Sixth form historians folllow the AS and A2 syllabuses of the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Examinations Board. The content specifications provided by OCR build on, but do not depend on , the knowledge, understanding and skills pupils will have acquired in years 7 to 9. The two AS modules are intended to provide an opportunity to develop from GCSE and to promote progression to the two A2 modules of the full GCE Advanced course. The subject content of AS includes English History and a choice between European and American History. All modules involve the study of historical perspectives which include issues such as cultural, economic and social developments. One module also involves study using documentary sources. The following table provides an outline off the two AS modules.

A2 In A2 modules, pupils are required to study changes over a period of about 100 years on one chosen theme. Such themes are not traditional outline courses but rather overview perspective studies in continuity and change. They also study a topic that focuses on historical interpretations and controversies with the use of mainly secondary course material. This includes a piece of coursework that enables pupils to investigate an historical problem or issue. They are free to construct a question of their own or use an OCR set question. Research skills and source evaluation are taught as part of this module so that pupils are adequately prepared to tackle their chosen topic area. The following table provides an outline of the two modules.
