ESOL

Welcome to the ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) department at Grenville.
Our aim in this department is to equip our overseas students with the English language skills that will enable them to reach their full potential in their academic study. We work to develop their English for both academic work and social situations in order to encourage full participation in the school community.
The department also values the opportunity that our overseas students offer in giving us, as English people, the chance to experience different cultures.

    Examinations

    ESOL

All students are recommended to enter the CAMBRIDGE language examinations, these are recognised worldwide.

The examinations offer good practice for exam experience for later university entrance.  We currently offer:

    • KET (Key English Test)
    • PET (Preliminary English Test)
    • IELTS (International Language Testing System) - the required English examination for entrance to Universities in Britain, Canada and Australia.
Our broad policy, especially with IELTS, is to enter students when it is felt that they are ready.  Thus each student is essentially on a personal programme, within the class, in the Sixth Form.  The earlier they can achieve the result they need the better as it will free up their time to focus on A levels.

We can offer training for other examinations if required, e.g. TOEFL or FCE.

    Syllabus

Preparation for IELTS offers a sound grounding in academic vocabulary.  Students will learn skills that are essential for their study in other subjects, describing and analysing data, how to structure an argument and how to generate ideas.  The topics covered in IELTS cross over and include a range of areas of study, such as might be encountered at GCE A and undergraduate university level.

    Extra Opportunities

Learning a language is much more than just learning the grammar and vocabulary, an awareness of customs and traditions is part of knowing how to apply the language learned in the classroom.
We visit places which offer an enjoyable insight into British culture. These may include businesses, houses that are open to the public, industries, art galleries, museums, and accessible towns. We welcome requests and ideas!
