Design and Technology (D&T) is an exciting and interesting subject that requires pupils to develop their ability to solve problems by using a range of materials, skills, and knowledge to design and make quality products. The aim of the Department is to provide all pupils with a fundamental knowledge of the following aspects of designing and making:

  • Recognising the Problem
  • Materials
  • Technology
  • Planning
  • Constructing
  • Finishing
  • Evaluating
  • Tools
  • Health and Safety
Pupils learn to use tools and equipment correctly and safely, so that they can develop their workshop skills to make products that they are proud of.

    Syllabus Years 7 to 9

    Design_Technology
  • All pupils follow a 10 week course of two double lessons per week.

  • Projects are planned in such a way as to capture the imagination of the able and experienced students whilst giving the unskilled or less able pupil a chance to produce a satisfactory solution.

  • Each project has a clear set of basic aims:
      • 1. To teach a set of basic skills.
        2. To provide an element of personal problem solving.
        3. To provide a better understanding of the properties of materials and structures.
        4. To give individual students a fair chance of personal satisfaction with the finished
product, which they can take pride in.
In addition to the making skills learnt in both the wood and metal workshops, pupils are taught basic drawing techniques (oblique, isometric and orthographic), and are introduced to CAD (computer aided design) using AutoSketch and ProDesktop (drawing in 3-D).

    Syllabus Years 10 and 11 - GCSE

GCSE Design and Technology: Resistant Materials (AQA)

    Assessment:

Coursework - 60% - Pupils undertake a major project by designing and making a quality product of their own choice.  A written design folio accompanies the practical work.

      Exam - 40% - A two hour written exam.

    Aims of the Department:

    • To build on the background knowledge of years 7 – 9 (KS3).
    • To help pupils develop a logical process for resolving design problems (The Design Process).
    • To enhance their knowledge of techniques and technical skills by giving practical experience in the use of a wide range of materials, tools and equipment.
    • To broaden their communication skills using a range of techniques including word processing, sketching and drawing in 3-D, and in the use of CAD, which is very important.
